Two-thirds of Americans are unable to differentiate between AI voices and real voices

A survey of 1,000 Americans has revealed attitudes and concerns toward AI technology. The survey found that most Americans cannot differentiate between AI voices and real voices — when asked whether a human voice was real or AI-generated, 2 out of 3 respondents incorrectly identified the authentic human voice as AI. Moreover, 81% of Americans are concerned about potential implications of AI voice cloning.

The top threats Americans are concerned about include:

  • Manipulation and deception (69%)
  • Identity theft (60%)
  • Privacy concerns (47%)
  • Data misuse (44%)
  • Job displacement (27%)

26% of Americans are wary about AI voice technology; additionally, more and more Americans worry that AI may influence elections. Perhaps as a result, 64% of those surveyed believe AI education should be added into school curriculums.
