Specialists provide insights on Omni Hotel ransomware incident

Omni Hotels & Resorts recently fell victim to a ransomware attack by the Daixin Team ransomware group. This incident caused disruptions across Omni Hotels & Resorts, and the Daixin Team claimed to have stolen information related to visitors dating back to 2017.

Security leaders share insights

Ken Dunham, Cyber Threat Director at Qualys Threat Research Unit:

“The rise in ransomware attacks in recent years indicates a shift in tactics by malicious actors to maximize impact and payout during an attack.

“Ransomware actors are now employing various methods to extort payments, such as file encryption, data exfiltration, DDoS attacks, and more.”

Darren Guccione, CEO and Co-Founder at Keeper Security:

“The cautious response from Omni Hotels & Resorts following a data breach is understandable as they navigate the challenges of managing reputational damage, legal obligations, and customer trust.

“Organizations should implement a zero-trust architecture and least-privilege access to mitigate the impact of cyberattacks.”

Narayana Pappu, CEO at Zendata:

“The ransomware attack on Omni Hotels & Resorts is significant, but with the ransom amount paid and systems restored, it appears that Omni Group has a secure backup of information.

“It seems that the Daixin ransomware group targeted a new vertical with this attack, and they have a history of targeting vulnerabilities in VPN servers.”
