Over 650,000 education records breached in the last 2 months
Recent research conducted by Abnormal Security has revealed a surge in cybercrime activities within the educational sector as the academic year draws near. The data indicates that over 650,000 records from various educational institutions have been compromised in the last 60 days.
The study highlights several key cyber incidents that took place in June and July:
- June 13: A data breach exposed the information of 46,169 university students in the US.
- June 13: Records of 576,735 elementary school teachers were exposed.
- July 10: 27,000 records, including student and staff information, were leaked online.
- July 19: A $200 million IT system was breached, affecting 25,000 individuals.
Phishing has been identified as the primary threat vector according to the research. Email scams were a common tactic used in the breaches mentioned. It is crucial for educational institutions to be alert against potential email threats as they kick off a new academic year.
