New report shows rise in cloud account breaches

A recent report by Red Canary delves into the current threat landscape that security leaders need to be aware of in the upcoming months and years. By analyzing almost 60,000 threats across endpoints, cloud infrastructure, networks, identities, and SaaS applications from various customers, the report identified key trends. While many threat tactics remained consistent, there were some new developments like increased use of email forwarding rules and cloud account compromises.

The report highlighted several noteworthy trends:

  • Cloud account attacks increased significantly, affecting three times more customers compared to the previous year.
  • There was a 600% rise in malicious email forwarding rules.
  • Half of the top threats were related to SEO poisoning and/or malvertising.
  • 50% of the top threats could potentially lead to ransomware attacks.
  • Threat actors exploited human vulnerabilities, using compromised identities for various malicious activities.

Given these findings, the report suggests that security leaders should assess their defenses, patch known vulnerabilities, and enhance their understanding of cloud security.
