New Malicious Email Campaign Utilizes Piano-Themed Scams to Entice Victims
A recent discovery by Proofpoint reveals a new malicious email campaign using piano-themed emails as bait for scams. The campaign primarily targets colleges and universities in North America, with observed targets in healthcare and food and beverage services as well.
The email suggests offering a piano to the target, requesting money for shipping costs. However, once the target sends the money, the malicious actor disappears with the funds. This campaign highlights how malicious actors exploit emotional tactics, such as fabricated stories of deceased family members who owned the piano.
Research as of January 2024 on this malicious email campaign indicates over 125,000 messages sent and involvement of at least one Bitcoin wallet with over $900,000 in transactions.
