
Gaming organizations were the target of 49% of DDoS attacks
DDoS attacks were examined in a recent report by Gcore. According to the report, there has been a sharp 46% increase in the number of DDoS attacks compared to the same period in 2023, with peak attack power measuring in terabits per second.
The total number of attacks during H1 2024 reached 830,000, marking a 46% rise from H1 2023. UDP floods accounted for 61% of DDoS attacks, while TCP floods and SYN floods made up 18% and 11% of the total attacks respectively.
The most targeted sectors were gaming (49%), technology (15%), financial services (12%), and telecommunications (10%). E-commerce (7%) and media and entertainment (5%) industries moved out of the ‘Other’ category in H1 2024, showing an increase in targeting compared to previous periods.
Attacks on the gaming industry in H1 2024 increased by 3% from H2 2023. Gcore observed gamers and gaming groups using DDoS attacks as a strategic advantage against opponents in competitions. The technology industry witnessed the most significant escalation in attacks, doubling to 15% over the prior two quarters.
Among the industries impacted by network-layer attacks in H1 2024, gaming led with 47%, followed by technology at 31%, and telecommunications with 14%. Financial services were the most targeted by application-layer attacks at 41%, likely due to their low tolerance for disruption and potential monetary gains for attackers. E-commerce was the second most affected industry with 28% of application-layer attacks, while media and entertainment accounted for 13% of total application-layer attacks.
