Federal Trade Commission focuses on deploying AI technology to prevent fraud

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is currently developing safeguards against fraud involving artificial intelligence (AI). The FTC has outlined its efforts to utilize various tools to address the rapid rise of AI-powered technologies and the potential risks they pose to consumers and businesses.

As part of its enforcement activities, the FTC has taken action against companies that deceive users about their use of AI or employ AI in unethical manners. For instance, the FTC has alleged that Amazon and Ring utilized sensitive data – such as voice recordings from Amazon’s Alexa and videos from Ring’s smart home security cameras – to train their algorithms, all while breaching customer privacy.

Additionally, FTC staff have discussed the agency’s initiatives to combat fraud involving AI-generated voice cloning. Scammers are utilizing voice cloning technology to impersonate individuals like family members, executives, and others in order to scam money from unsuspecting consumers.
