Critical infrastructure cyberattacks rose by 30% in the span of one year

A recent report from KnowBe4 has brought attention to the increasing threat of cyber incidents targeting critical infrastructure. According to the report, cyberattacks against critical infrastructure have seen a 30% increase since 2022, with over 420 million attacks recorded between January 2023 and 2024, averaging at 13 attacks per second.

On a global scale, the average number of cyber incidents per week is on the rise, quadrupling since 2020 and doubling in 2023 alone. Additionally, vulnerabilities in the power grids of the United States are growing, with approximately 60 new vulnerabilities identified daily. This has increased the total count from 21,000 in 2022 to around 23,000-24,000 currently.

Stu Sjouwerman, CEO at KnowBe4, warns that the report’s findings should serve as a wake-up call for critical infrastructure sectors. He emphasizes the importance of creating a strong security culture that encompasses technology, processes, and people to effectively mitigate these risks. Sjouwerman stresses that every organization, regardless of size or industry, plays a crucial role in safeguarding collective infrastructure. He advocates for viewing cybersecurity as more than just an IT issue, but as a vital component of operational resilience and national security.
