Robust bot protection is implemented by only 6% of media websites
Bot attacks were analyzed in a recent report by DataDome, revealing that over 65% of websites are not adequately protected against simple bot attacks, while 95% of advanced bot attacks go undetected on websites.
Industries focused on consumers and digital technology are particularly vulnerable to cybercriminals and lack proper defenses against malicious bots. This exposes sensitive data and compromises the customer experience, leading to financial losses and damage to reputation. The report identifies luxury and e-commerce sectors as high-risk areas for online fraud, with only 5% of luxury brand websites and 10% of e-commerce websites fully protected against bad bots, especially alarming as the holiday shopping season approaches.
Furthermore, 6% of media websites have strong bot protection, leaving 94% susceptible to ad fraud, content scraping, and DDoS attacks. The study highlights the link between the rise in malicious internet traffic and the vulnerability of high-traffic websites. Hackers favor bad bot creation due to its speed and cost efficiency in carrying out online fraud.
Companies face challenges in defending against bot threats with advancements in automated browsers, anti-detection tools, proxies, and AI assistance making it harder to detect and stop attacks. Even with some level of bot protection in place, 45% of tested domains were still breached by bots, with fake Chrome bots being particularly difficult to detect, leaving businesses exposed to various threats including layer 7 DDoS attacks and account fraud.
On a regional level, Europe has the lowest protection against simple bot attacks, with 68% of websites lacking adequate protection and only 8% fully secured. North America closely follows, with 64% of websites unprotected and 9% fully protected.
