QR code scams target UK motorists by malicious actors

Reports indicate that motorists in the United Kingdom are falling victim to QR code scams. A recent study highlighted the rise of these scams, where malicious QR codes lead users to phishing websites posing as legitimate parking payment services to obtain personal data, including payment details. The United Kingdom is not the only country facing this issue, as similar scams have been reported in Europe, Canada, and the United States.

Victims of these scams may have their personal information, such as license plate number, vehicle make and model, and location code, compromised. This data can potentially be used in future phishing attacks to make the fraudulent communication appear more convincing to the target.

The study also estimated the number of victims by tracking the traffic to these malicious websites, revealing an average of 13 visitors per hour and 320 visitors per day. This indicates that a significant number of individuals are at risk of having their personal information stolen through these scams.
