Allegations of compromised voter information intended to sow doubt in election integrity

The FBI and CISA caution that claims of hacked voter data are being spread to sow doubt in the election process. These organizations emphasize that these claims are false and are meant to erode confidence in the security of U.S. elections. The assertions being circulated suggest that cyberattacks have breached databases containing U.S. voter registration information.

CISA Senior Advisor Cait Conley warns, “It is important to be aware that false claims about election infrastructure being compromised, such as a voter registration database hack, may be disseminated by foreign entities in an effort to manipulate public opinion and undermine trust in our democratic system.”

In response, the FBI and CISA have issued a joint statement to inform the public. They point out that malicious actors are spreading misinformation and using voter registration data to support their false claims of data breaches. Nevertheless, the FBI and CISA clarify that the availability of voter registration information through public sources does not indicate a compromise of databases.

“The FBI is actively investigating any attempts made by malicious cyber actors to target U.S. elections,” notes Cynthia Kaiser, Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI Cyber Division. “Our investigations have revealed that bad actors often seek to undermine confidence in U.S. elections by exaggerating claims about accessing voter information. We urge the public to critically assess any reports of hacked or leaked voter data and remember that voter registration information is generally public. We are dedicated to combating misinformation and assisting election officials in enhancing election security.”

As of September 12, 2024, the FBI and CISA affirm that there is no evidence of voter registration data being compromised.
