Cybersecurity: The Trials and Triumphs Faced by Women

September 1, 2024, marks International Women in Cyber Day, recognized by professionals in the cybersecurity field.

Lynn Dohm, Executive Director of Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS), emphasizes the importance of celebrating the contributions of women in cybersecurity. She notes the progress made in training and mentoring women in cybersecurity but calls for the industry to create inclusive environments for women to succeed and advance in cybersecurity roles.

Despite progress, challenges remain for women in cybersecurity. Dohm highlights the disparity in the number of women in the industry and the lack of advancement opportunities they face.

Representation in cybersecurity

Isabel Castillo, Cloud Security Analyst at Lastwall, stresses the importance of visibility and representation in the industry to shift perceptions and foster an environment where everyone is encouraged to pursue tech careers.

Addressing gender inequality in cybersecurity 

Nicole Sundin, CPO at Axio, suggests ways security professionals can act against gender bias in the workplace, including advocating for equal pay and mentoring women in leadership roles.

Recognizing International Women in Cyber Day

On International Women in Cyber Day, cyber professionals have the opportunity to acknowledge the progress made for women in the industry and address the setbacks they still face. Dohm emphasizes the importance of adding diverse perspectives to the cybersecurity field to address evolving threats and close the ongoing workforce gap.
